Location: Coogee Bay Road, Coogee Beach
Project: Coogee Bay Road Shared village - Public space project (link)
Council: Randwick city council
The Coogee Bay Road Shared Village project was developed in response to Covid-19 social distancing regulations in order to provide more space on Coogee Bay Road for business and community use. The project involved changing the traffic flow to one way in the section of Coogee Bay Road between Arden Street and Brook Street and was installed in November 2020 for an initial trial period of 3 months.
The southbound travel lane was converted to car parking lane and the original car parking lane was converted to outdoor dining space.
Based on positive feedback from local businesses and community members a report was sent to the February 2021 Council Meeting with a recommendation for the project to be extended. At that meeting Council resolved to extend the project for an additional three months until the end of April 2021, after which time the project was to be discontinued and dismantled.
